Primeval S04E01 (ITV)

Old Primeval cast, via Wikipedia

Primeval is a British science fiction drama television program produced by Impossible Pictures for ITV. The first episode was broadcast on 10th February 2007, and was renewed for a second series by ITV, which started on 12th January 2008.

The series follows a team of scientists who investigate anomalies in time and deal with the creatures that travel through. The team of five is led by Professor Nick Cutter, a palaeontologist determined to find his wife, who disappeared while investigating an anomaly in the Forest of Dean eight years previously.

From the Wikipedia entry on Primeval.

As much as the premise sounds ridiculous, the series is actually quite good. Things really get interesting when the predator from the future arrives in our timeline and wreaks havoc. There is also the enigmatic Helen, Dr. Nick Cutter’s ex-wife, who travels between times. She’s trying to get to the future era, but spends most of her time in the Permian Era.

I actually like the second series a lot more than the new season of Torchwood, and that’s saying a lot. The actors are good in Primeval and they have good chemistry, something that is completely absent from Torchwood. To confound matters even further, Dr. Cutter changed something by traveling into the past. Claudia Brown is missing and no one knows of her. He might have just stepped into an alternate worldline. However, clues are shown that there might be other time traveling agents involved. This show is really getting good.

Most definitely, Primeval is way better that the current season of Torchwood. Primeval is better than the first season of Torchwood. There are better action scenes, the script is better and it’s just plain more entertaining. The team is interesting and although Connor, Cutter and Stephen’s love life is a part of the show, it’s part of the fun. Connor is just the über geek. Stephen is still sleeping with Helen, behind Cutter’s back. Cutter doesn’t know what to do about the Claudia Brown mystery.

I was pretty happy to learn that Primeval would be coming back in 2011. Cutter is still dead, as is Helen, and Danny is missing, but Abby an Connor make it back. Immediately, some of the characters hint toward some kind of conspiracy. It’s been a year since Connor and Abby have disappeared, and much has changed. The ARC facility is now under a PPP, and the new boss is interested in all things relating to the anomalies.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Danny, Connor, and Abby went through an anomaly to stop Helen from destroying the human race after she killed her husband. They have been lost in time. A new team was put together to battle the anomalies.

Some dinosaur got loose in the ARC. It’s the fault of some girl in blue shoes wearing some strange colors. Some guy gets it into an office. It sounds like the dinosaur is thirsty. They lock it in Lester’s office.

Abby is foraging for something. It’s been a few months since they’ve been stranded. Or a few years. Connor is still alive. They are waiting for an anomaly to open up. Abby is more practical. Connor goes fishing. A dinosaur comes after him. Abby is freaking out while perusing her notes. Connor comes back. The dinosaur finds their camp, but they manage to survive. They’ve been here a year. Abby says that they have to move camp.

They run into another dino. He takes Abby’s thermal blanket. Connor retrieves it and finds Helen’s anomaly device. Connor manages to make it work. They open up an anomaly. A dinosaur is near it, stopping them from going through.

Matt covers for Jess with James about the dinosaur. Becker tranqs the dinosaur. Apparently the EMDs have arrived. They are fancy tasers. Becker doesn’t believe it will work. Matt shoots him to prove a point. Some suit named Philip comes by. The minister wants Philip to put another ½ billion into the ARC. He puts all of Prospero’s resources at James’ disposal. Philip is an entrepreneur with money. The ARC is a PPP now.

They have an anomaly warning. It must be the same that Abby and Connor are trying to go through. Abby tries to distract the dinosaur. There are two dinosaurs now, fighting. Connor and Abby make a run for it. They get through. The ARC troops fire some kind of device to close the anomaly. They find Becker welcoming them home. They are surprised not to see Danny. He’s still MIA.

Connor thinks that he can completely close the anomaly with the device, but instead he opens it back up. A dinosaur comes through. Matt and Becker try to coral it using a garbage truck. They want to coral into an arena. Abby and Connor take a truck. It’s a good idea because Becker and Matt were having trouble. They have to lead it to the arena. They are successful. The spinosaurus is trapped. Connor tries to open an anomaly with his device while the troops are getting ready to incapacitate the dino. Abby starts working the stage lights as a distraction. The dinosaur swallows the device and at the last moment, it opens an anomaly inside it. The dino is gone.

Philip Burton meets Connor. The ARC is being managed by the private sector. Philip is a scientist. He invented room-temperature superconductors. They are told that the front-line teams are formed by personnel with military background.

Matt meets with a contact. He is telling him about what happened with Connor and Abby. He wants Abby and Connor inside the ARC so that Matt can monitor them.

  1. What happened to Abby, Connor, and Danny. Why can’t you make the otherteam evil and bring in the old one?
