I’ve been a Nathan Fillion fan for quite a while. Ever since Firefly, I was really impressed by his acting. Since he is starring in a new series named Castle, I took it upon myself to watch it weekly.

Anyway, what do I like about Castle? Well it stars an obnoxious, womanizing novelist. Detective Kate Beckett is a closet hottie, played by Stana Katic. Her hotness is kind of hard to explain. The actress is quite hot, but in Castle, she toned it down. She doesn’t wear much makeup and favors a natural look, kind of like “Oh I’m hot, but I could be the girl next door, BTW, FYI, I’m still smoking hot.” That’s how I described her in my mind. She’s kind of got the ex-catwalk model look going for her, which is quite good.

So that’s a good point. Plus she’s Canadian and a good actress. That’s always a good combination.

Warning: spoilers ahead

The show centers around a novelist who is brought in to help deal with a string of murders which seem to be taken from the pages of his novels. At the same time, Castle has hit massive writer’s block after killing off the hero of his mystery book franchise, Derek Storm. Through Beckett, he is able to write once again.

Halfway between a drama and a romantic comedy, Castle is a fun show to watch. The characters play around a lot, making the viewer wonder when or if they will ever get together. It didn’t take Castle long to find out what makes Beckett tick. He uses clues and his imagination deftly.

ABC has started to release chapters of Richard Castle’s new book Heat Wave on its website. They are up to chapter 8 and I haven’t started yet, but it’s a pretty cool tie-in to the show.

Raglan phones Beckett. He was the detective working on her mother’s case. He wants to tell her something. He’s playing around with guns. He asks to meet her, but with no cops. She takes Castle.

Raglan has got lymphoma, six months to live. Before he can say what happened with her mom’s case, he is shot by a sniper. He had time to say that that when she shot her mother’s killer, it started some noise. It all started 19 years ago. Beckett’s mom was killed 12 years ago.

He was shot with a 338 magnum round from across the street. The captain lets her investigate, even though she is close to the case. The shooter had an access card to the building. They question his old partner. Raglan got involved with Vulcan Simmons, who ran half the drug trade in NYC. Raglan was a gambler and got some money from Simmons. He was working as a dope courier.

Simmons was running dope in Washington Heights. That’s where Joanna Beckett was trying to clean up the neighbourhood. They question Simmons. He’s a cool customer. He provokes Beckett and she bites. Ryan and Esposito have to stop her. The captain pulls Beckett off the case. He puts Ryan and Esposito in charge.

You can’t charm your way out of a bullet.

Castle drops by to see Beckett. She’s never stopped working on the case. They take a look at her old files. Her mom had photos of the place where she was killed a week before she died. She might have been looking into what happened in the alley.

Ryan and Esposito watch the surveillance photos. The sniper touched a woman upon his exit. They have the brilliant idea of printing the woman’s arm. It matches Kyle Lockwood. They find his hotel room. He has been watching Beckett. They put a detail on Beckett.

On the prints, they find a high dose of an anti-anxiety drug. Snipers use these to slow their heartbeat to get longer to shoot. They trace this to some street dealer named Chad Roderick. They bring him in. He denies knowing Kyle. He sold the pills to Joleen, not Kyle Lockwood. She is one of his regulars.

Castle traces the alley to the murder of an FBI agent in a mob bar. Raglan arrested Joe Pulgatti for the crime. Johanna was a civil rights attorney. They go question Pulgatti. He says that it was a kidnapping gone wrong. He was in the alley with Bobby, the guy who was killed. He implies that Raglan was one of the kidnappers. He was part of the ghost crew of kidnappers. He contacted her mother. She agreed to look into his case, even though everyone else had refused. There are at least two more officers with Raglan. It’s Raglan’s old partner. They had to silence Beckett’s mom and her associates when they tried to put an appeal together for Pulgatti. Gary says that he didn’t have anything to do with the murders. It was someone else. He’s afraid of someone and asks for a lawyer.

They’ve traced Joleen. Kyle Lockwood is following Beckett. They find Joleen Granger dead. Lockwood threw a grenade at Ryan and Esposito. It was a flash bang. Lockwood must have grabbed them. Lockwood plans on torturing Ryan and Esposito to find out what they know about him and his employer.

They get Lockwood’s number from Joleen’s cell phone bill. They trace the GPS signal. Some goon is watching a place. Castle and Beckett kiss to distract the goon. Beckett takes him out.

Beckett and Castle arrive just in time to stop Lockwood from shooting Ryan in the knees. Castle saves Beckett’s life by tackling Lockwood and taking him out.

Lockwood isn’t talking. They booked him as John Doe, because he isn’t Lockwood. She says that she put a lot of people away and they have a little fan club going for her in this jail. They will be on his case.
