The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.
Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.
Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The CBI is going on lockdown. Someone went up to the roof where Jane works. They are chasing a suspect. Hightower has a shotgun to Jane’s head. WTF. She says that they should stand back, or Jane dies.
36 hours earlier, the CBI were called to a museum. Manuel Montero was found dead. He was a professor. A $200K Mayan gold statue was stolen. Most of the pieces in this collection belonged to Montero. He was rich and loaned them to the museum. He showed pieces privately. Montero typed blog on his calculator watch.
Laroche comes to see Hightower. He shows her some photos. It’s rumoured that Hightower was seeing the deceased. Johnson killed him and he was burned alive.
Rigsby and Cho check out Montero’s warehouse. While other antiquities dealers were closing shop, Montero was making more profits. At the warehouse, some dudes are loading some crates. One of them pulls a gun. Cho and Rigsby return fire. They find assault rifles in the crates, not antiquities. They arrest one guy. His name is Roberto Salazar. Salazar runs the shipping op, weapons and antiquities. Jane thinks that Montero was killed for another reason. It had nothing to do with antiquities or weapons.
Jane sees Hightower smoking. She’s stressed. Jane surmises that she talked with Laroche. He tells her that no matter what happened, Laroche will find out.
Laroche shows Hightower a map of possible suspects who might have killed Johnson. Hightower is among the five suspects who could have killed him. Hightower tells Laroche that she was sleeping with the officer. They were no longer together when he died.
Montero was best friends with Johnson. Johnson got his gun from Montero. Lisbon is about to brief the top brass, including the director, Laroche and Hightower.
Jane goes to the fingerprint lab. Jane calls Hightower. He needs to talk with her in private. Jane tells her that he knows that she killed Johnson. Hightower is in the middle of a briefing. Jane is waiting for her with a shotgun. He wants to use her to find Red John. She knows some of his secrets. She distracts him and disarms him.
The tech shows Lisbon that they found Hightower’s prints at the museum. Laroche isn’t surprised. Laroche takes charge. They search her home. They find the stolen Mayan statue there.
The action picks up after Hightower with a gun on Jane’s head. She ducktaped the shotgun’s barrel to Jane’s head. There is more ducktape around her finger and hand. If she is killed, she might reflexively pull the trigger. Hightower manages to get away.
They find Jane when the SUV crashed. Hightower is gone. He crashed it when Hightower was removing the tape from her hand.
Jane is told that Laroche went home. He goes there and gives him a bottle of scotch.
After Laroche closes the door, Jane goes to his car and knocks on the trunk. Hightower comes out. She asks him if it worked. He says that it did.
Jane put her in the trunk. Red John framed her for murder. She has to go into hiding.
