The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.
Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.
Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

There is a body found at a golf club. Micah Newton was struck from behind. He’s a doctor. He was slicing his balls, which indicates stress. Laroche pops up and wants to know about Hightower. Laroche has been appointed as Hightower’s replacement. Lisbon pushes Laroche’s buttons and so he puts Cho in charge of the team.
He was killed with a single blow to the head. It was precise. Jane thinks that a doctor did it. Lisbon and Jane go to the hospital. They sit in on a transplant meeting. Newton started the transplant department at his hospital, but faced trouble from Quick, the chief of surgery, who immediately took over for Newton and made sweeping decisions. Lisbon likes not having to reign Jane in anymore.
Rigsby and Cho question the husband. He shows them a threatening letter from Byron Jordan. Van Pelt questions him. They had to jump through hoops at the hospital. This isn’t how organ transplants work In the US. There is a national registry. Individual hospitals don’t make decisions on which patients are to receive organs.
Jane pages Watson to the OR so that he can talk with patient Siberia, the patient who jumped up the transplant list. As soon as he enters, some goon pulls a gun on him. Siberia is a Russian Mafia. The Russian calls Quick, who arrives quickly enough. When Lisbon arrives, Jane tells her about the gun and the assault. They take the goon in. He’s got an extensive record in Moscow. He stayed with Arodny all night. Since arriving in the US, he hasn’t left Arodny’s side until now.
Newton’s radiation badge indicated a lot of radiation exposure. For now, they don’t know why. They find out that someone had swiped his badge last night while he was giving a lecture to medical students.
The nurses tell Jane that Watson is the sweetest. Jane finds out that he lied about covering for Dr. Quick last night. Jane follows him with Rigsby. He brought donuts in the middle of the murder window. Watson is helping heroin addicts. It turns out that he was moonlighting at a mobile clinic last night. Newton knew about this.
Newton’s badge allowed him access to all of the hospital, but someone used it to access radiology three times as much as any other doctor. They track Francine Trent down. She just bought a bus ticket. She’s got a lead-lined suitcase filled with Caesium 137. The pellets can be sold for a small fortune.
Jane goes to see Arodny and writes something on his chest. Arodny is sedated, getting ready for surgery. Then he gives coffee to the transplant team.
Francine gave up her buyer but she’s got a water-tight alibi. Laroche gives Lisbon a commendation for getting the Caesium 137. It could be weaponized for a dirty bomb. Laroche puts her back in charge.
Jane is paged because of the message on Arodny. He tells them that they have all been drugged with the same drug that Watson used to get rid of the opiates. One of the people in this room is an addict and has been stealing the meds of the patients in this hospital. Newton figured this out and this is what got him killed. It’s the anaesthesiologist. They find her trying to inject. Jane didn’t spike the coffee, he lured out the killer.
Cho question her. She says that last week, he talked to her about what he discovered. He was going to report her to the medical license board. She followed him and killed him.
Quick was fired because he traded a kidney for a new MRI machine.
