The Mentalist Redacted S03E20 (CBS)

The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.

Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.

Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Someone breaks into an office and replaces something in a safe. Then, the masked person goes through some books. It’s Laroche’s place. Laroche arrives and starts shooting after the person didn’t comply. The cops catch him. We can see Jane speeding away in his Citroën.

Lisbon and her team are at a scene. The alarm was tripped in a place. Someone was murdered. The place was tossed. Jane is up to something.

It turns out that Jane hired some guy to rob Laroche’s place. Come Monday, he’s going to tell the truth in front of a judge. He didn’t find anything.

The dead guy is named Ted Fisher. They are going to talk with the girlfriend. Laroche says that the burglar is Donnie Coalpepper. Jane makes Laroche suspicious. The place the girlfriend shared with Fisher was tossed. Someone is looking for something and hasn’t found it.

Lisbon spots a tail on them. She has Rigsby run the place. There is an angry message on Fisher’s voicemail. The person has an Iraqi accent. Van Pelt can’t find a record of Fisher in the Peace Corps.

They trace the car which was following them. It was recently ticketed near Fisher’s repair shop. They find one of Fisher’s neighbors and a hobo in the shop with guns. They arrest them.

The hobo is Cole Rueger. They worked at Segaris, a military security firm. They are mercenaries. Ted called him two days ago and said that he was in trouble. He was overseas. Fisher was already dead when he arrived in the country. The girl is Vivian Griswold. A client hired her 6 months ago to spy on Fisher. She works for a private intelligence firm. It involved a major theft that occurred two years ago overseas. She’s got exactly the same reason for going into the shop as Rueger. One of them is lying.

The State Department has been in contact with Laroche about Ted Fisher.

They go see the girlfriend again. Someone has been prowling around her place. Someone was trying to get into her place.

Ted’s phone gives them a lead. Rigsby and Cho arrest the Iraqi caller. Fisher took $2 million from the Hassan family. When they arrived, he didn’t give back the money. The killer is looking for the cash. Jane tells Lisbon that she should convene all of the interested parties. The truth will come out. Jane is busy trying to cover his ass.

Cho, Rigsby, and Van Pelt go looking for Rueger and Griswold. They find Rueger quickly enough. Jane helps them find Griswold. She was surveilling the place. Jane and Lisbon bring in some forensics guys to go through the place. They find nothing. Jane tells the girlfriend that it’s the carpet. It’s old and valuable. The girlfriend is the murderer.

Jane could have broken the Coalpepper guy out, but he doesn’t want to go on the run.

Jane comes clean to Lisbon. He tells Lisbon that Laroche has something he wants. He says that Hightower didn’t murder anybody. She was framed by Red John’s plant inside the CBI. He was trying to steal the list that Laroche compiled in the Todd Johnson murder. Lisbon walks in and decks Coalpepper. The case has to be dismissed because it violates due process. She gets suspended for a week and 6 months of anger management classes. Jane thanks her.
