Torchwood Miracle Day Rendition S04E02 (BBC)

Torchwood Miracle Day title card, via Wikipedia

Torchwood is a science fiction drama television program, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles. It deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, who deal with supernatural occurrences. An initial 13-part series was commissioned by the BBC as a spin-off from the long-running science fiction program Doctor Who with which it is closely interlinked.

From the Torchwood Wikipedia entry.

I’ve been busy watching the Tour de France and also playing Dragon Age II, so I haven’t had much time to watch shows, but at least I’m making time for Torchwood. It’s been a while since the last series, and I was wondering if Torchwood would be back. They had also killed off most of the team, so you always wondered in what form they’d be back. The new American additions to Torchwood aren’t that impressive. They are actually quite annoying, but the whole premise of Miracle Day is somewhat tantalizing. I’ve watched 3 episodes, and we still have to find out what exactly is going on.

The first three episodes were pretty good in my opinion. I watched them all in one go, so it’s safe to assume that the story is good. The whole collaboration with an American TV channel is somewhat strange, but it makes for an interesting setting since they spend a good amount of time in the US.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Gwen, Rhys, and Jack are being extradited. Actually, Rhys is staying in Wales as is the baby. Some woman meets them at the airport. She’s from another agency and she’s American.

Esther is told what is happening with Rex and Torchwood. She goes to see one of the directors, who tells her that the matter is with Ops now, not with Intelligence. The CIA is organized into Operations and Intelligence. Intelligence has got all of the analysts while Operations is responsible for clandestine ops and wetworks.

Before getting on the plane, Rex took Jack’s control bracelet. It keeps bleeping. Jack tells Rex that the event is beyond the scope of anything he’s seen before. The event has something to do with a morphic field. It’s because everyone everywhere became immortal at the same time.

Morphic field is some theory by Rupert Sheldrake, which is basically pseudoscience. Sheldrake is a biologist by training, who dabbles in parapsychology.

The director uses some kind of strange telephone with a spinning triangle screen. It tells him to ‘remove’. He sends the info to his agent on the plane.

The agent dopes Jack and Gwen.

Danes goes on TV and meets a PR woman named Jilly Kitzinger.

Vera Juarez goes to Washington to participate on some panels. The situation is just getting worse. The more antibiotics are used, they will face germ-resistant microbes and bacteria everywhere.

Esther sees men taking Rex’s HD and going through his office. Then, she sees something else happening. She’s in trouble. Her username no longer works and she’s received $50K in her bank account. They are trying to frame her for something.

Esther is trying to get away with her friend’s ID. it doesn’t take them long to track her down but she gets into a car and is gone.

Jack is sick on the plane. Gwen tells Rex to search the girl. They find some pills. He’s been poisoned by arsenic. They call Juarez. She uses a panel to come up with EDT, which will render the arsenic inactive.

They are successful and report to the director, who wonders about Lynn.

Juarez and one of the panels discovers that people are still aging. Juarez meets Jilly. Now, Jilly is a drug rep.

Rex lands. Lynn is given the key to her handcuffs. Esther phones him. Rex also had a deposit in his bank account. She tells him to get out. Rex frees Gwen and Jack and they take out the guards. Lynn pounces on him, and Rex snaps her neck. Naturally, she’s not dead. Rex hands Jack’s bracelet back.

They meet up with Juarez and Esther and get away.
