True Blood Me and the Devil S04E05 (HBO)

Season 4 poster, via Wikipedia

This series is based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries books by Charlaine Harris. It tells the story of how humans and vampires co-exist in a small southern town. This show has an addictive quality. After the third season started, I bought all of the books and read them. They were quite good, albeit short. The TV series is quite faithful to the books, which is always nice. There are some differences and the ‘adult’ factor makes for something that is interesting to watch on American TV.

Thanks to the books, there will be a lot of material available for the screenwriters for the story arcs in this show.

The series is adapted by Alan Ball. He also produced it. Alan Ball is the man behind Six Feet Under. The setting is interesting as well. Thanks to HBO, the show does have some mature content. It makes the whole thing more interesting.

New Orleans and Louisiana are a hotbed for vampire fiction. Lestat of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice makes the city his home.

The fourth season is off to a rocking start, as you’d expect from such a good show. Many of the the plotlines from Dead to the World have been integrated into the show. Naturally, there are enough differences to make the show worthwhile to watch, even for people who have read all of the Southern Vampire Mysteries,.

I like to watch True Blood episodes in batches. After I finished reading all of the Southern Vampire Mysteries, I was pretty happy to see True Blood return. You quickly forget how good this show is, but just like all of the previous episodes, this one is an incredible one. The story eases you in before ending with a bang. It turns out that Sookie went missing for over a year and a lot has changed since she left.

Her time in Faerie wasn’t happy, as they use their glamor to manipulate humans. Back on the earthly plane, things have moved on quite rapidly. Tara has left, Jason is a cop, Bill is a King, and Eric is Eric. I can see how they have woven in elements of the book, Dead to the World, into this storyline.

We learn that the witch Antonia had quite a lot of powers, enough to turn a lot of vampires into dust the last time that she was around. Marnie has got no idea what she is invoking and Bill, who has had only experience with her mortal shell, not Antonia the avenging spirit, underestimates her as well.

Joly is dragging Tommy with a chain around his neck. He strangles him and Tommy passes out. Tommy was just faking. Tommy has to fight off both his mom and dad. He commits patricide. Then matricide? He knocks his mom out too when she tries to kill him.

Tommy brings the bodies to Sam. They ride off and run into Andy Bellefleur. Andy juices up on V before coming out of his car. Sam tells Tommy to get into the back. He’s covered in blood. Andy finds a gator in the back. It’s Tommy.

“I didn’t kill him.”

Lafayette and Tara tell Marnie that she screwed them again by going after Pam. Marnie tells them that she came back. Jesus realizes that Marnie was possessed. Marnie say stat she was a conduit. All three of them leave Marnie alone.

They pack up and get ready to leave. Lafayette and Jesus are going to Mexico. Tara is going back to New Orleans. Jesus wants to see his grandfather, a powerful brujah.

Tara gives her honey a call. She found out that Tara is Tara, not Toni.

Arlene thinks that Rene is coming back to take Mike.

“Keep your ghost hands off my baby!”
“God’s coming for you!”

Terry says they need to get a man of God in here to exorcize something. They get Reverend Daniels and Tara’s mom. Arlene sounds like a racist and they sing some songs.

“The sage smokes out the evil. Gotta get it in the corners. That’s where the evil hides out.”

Terry and Arlene make love. Mikey is sleeping fine.

Eric is looking over Sookie and sees Godric. Eric doesn’t recognize Godric. He forces Eric to drink from Sookie. It was just a dream. He goes to see Sookie with his fangs drawn. She wakes up and he tells her he had a bad dream.

Eric is in Sookie’s bed. Eric is crying. Sookie says that Godric was his maker. She tells him that he isn’t evil.

Jessica and Hoyt bring Jason home.

Portia Bellefleur runs after Bill. She doesn’t seem to get the message. He has to glamor her. He makes her afraid of him. She runs off screaming.

Disfigured Pam comes to see Bill. She wants to kill a witch. He says that the Vampire Authority has tied his hands.

Sookie asks Holly about the witches. She’s pumping her for information. Sookie’s talent comes in handy. She knows where the witches are hanging out.

She goes to see Marnie at Moon Goddess. She wants to have a reading. Against her expectations, Marnie talks to her about her Gran. She say that she should look after her brother. Her Gran says that she shouldn’t give her new man her heart because it will not last. Sookie starts reading her mind and hears her Gran. Her Gran knows that she is listening in and says that Marnie is a great danger. Gran tells her to run. Sookie does as she’s told.

Tara tells Sookie about Naomi and New Orleans. Sookie tells her to fight for Naomi.

“You gotta be honest with the people you love.”

At nightfall, Eric comes out and there is a confrontation. Tara freaks out, and takes a poker. She yells at Sookie and Eric, about all the bad things that Eric did to Sookie. It’s like Eric is hearing this for the first time.

Hoyt and Jason are at Merlotte’s as well. Jason blames sex for what has happened to him.

“God is punishing for having too much sex.”

Jason learns that the full moon is tomorrow night.

Marnie gets captured by the VA. She’s put in detention. Antonia comes to her. She tells her another spell and shows her another vision. Some of the priests in the Spanish Inquisition were vampires and fed on the witches.

Bill interrogates her from far away. Marnie says that she doesn’t know how to reverse the spells that she has cast. Bill sees no other solution but to glamor her into revealing the truth. Pam thinks that he is insane. Bill needs to be sure. He glamors her and gets the truth, as she told him beforehand. Now Pam is in deep shit. It’s like she’s decomposing.

Lafayette and Jesus meet the grandfather. He was expecting them.

The pack master of Shreveport comes to see Alcide. Alcide has been living in Shreveport for weeks and hasn’t registered with the pack. Marcus doesn’t sound like a happy camper.

Tommy and Sam are getting rid of the bodies in the swamp. Tommy thinks that he is going to Hell. I think that his mom is still alive or the actress has trouble playing dead. Sam says that he killed two people. Sam uses marshmallows to attract the gators.

Jason wakes up and finds Jessica trying to mount him. He thinks that it’s a dream. Then Hoyt is next to him.

After confirming with Sookie that he did all those terrible things to her, Eric tries to leave. Sookie asks him to stay. They neck.

Bill convenes the Sheriffs of Louisiana. One of the Sheriffs named Luis tells him the story of the witch Antonia and his maker. Antonia used her necromancy to waken all of the vampires from slumber during the day. They went out and burned, his maker included.

Pam blurts out that Eric is a shell and that the witch erased all of his memories. Bill becomes extremely angry and goes off to Sookie’s.
