The Closer Death Warrant S07E08 (TNT)

The Closer on TNT

The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its seventh season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed.

I just read that this will be the last season of The Closer. The spin-off series adds another 6 episodes to the usual 15 of this year to lead into it. The spin-off will be called Major Crimes and will feature Captain Raydor. The decision to retire The Closer was made by Kyra Sedgwick. It’s too bad. I don’t like Raydor all that much. Still, Major Crimes has already been optioned for 10 episodes next summer. The theme for this season is love and loss.

A con has a lead on a murder that’s about to happen. It will involve a drug cartel, and the Chief has to work interference with Raydor in order to get the job done.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The Chief is having trouble getting rid of her stuff while she enters a prison. The prisoners give her a round of applause. Gabriel is with her. They are here to see Greg Diamond.

He wants to talk to them about a murder that’s about to happen. A prisoner ordered a hit on the outside and he peaked on it. He wants a deal from the DA. He names some file number. He tells them to look it up.

It’s a case before the Superior Court. It’s Robert Curtis, a banker for a drug cartel. Pope wants them to pass the buck to the Sheriff’s department and DDA Hobbs, who is prosecuting the case.

The Chief doesn’t do so. She starts her investigation. Fritzi and Raydor have come in. It’s all about the Garcia cartel.

The Chief tells Raydor that Diamond was manhandled during his last arrest. Raydor should start an FID investigation. This will get the ball rolling and let Raydor investigate a bit more on Diamond. Flynn didn’t get this, but Gabriel did. Raydor finds that Diamond is dead.

Diamond met with a woman earlier. He passed the order for the hit with a kiss. Her name is Maria Flores, his girlfriend.

The Chief asks Raydor to continue investigating the “police brutality” charge. Raydor says that he told Flores what happened (he didn’t) so she might make an excellent witness.

Gavin comes by to see the Chief. The Chief wants to blow him off again, but Gavin tells her that she will be charged his whole day’s worth of clients if she does. Raydor pulls her aside and says that they still have to find the mole.

Flynn knows Gavin. He defended him against some charge. Gavin talks with the detectives. Sanchez has got some questions of his own.

DDA Hobbs is in Pope’s office complaining. The Chief manages to get onto the security detail to speak to Curtis. He goes to court today. Fritzi says that he is going with Brenda. She’s not going anywhere where bullets are going to fly alone.

Curtis flirts with the Chief. Fritzi smartly leaves them alone for a few minutes. Curtis knows Flores. Every time she visits someone in the joint, someone on the outside dies. She’s a low-level stooge in the Garcia cartel. Curtis’ attorney arrives.

Raydor found Flores. Maria knows the location of the secret court. Raydor is following her. The Chief tells the DDA about this. Curtis isn’t testifying today.

It doesn’t make sense for the Garcias to go after Curtis. He knows where all of their money is. They might be going after DDA Hobbs.

Hobbs is with Fritzi, having a coffee, discussing the case. Flores picked up a passenger. The hit takes place and Fritzi saves Hobbs. Hobbs is hit in the shoulder.

Sanchez and Gabriel are in pursuit. They’re not letting her go. The car crashes. The shooter drops his gun and starts walking away. They are in front of some market stalls. They provide human cover. The police can’t shoot or they’ll hit innocent bystanders. Raydor grabs a beanbag shotgun from her trunk and shoots the idiot in the face. That was cool. He’s on the ground. The detectives are suitably impressed.

They found a lot of evidence in Flores’ car. The shooter is Hector Medina, a Mexican national.

The Chief questions Curtis and his lawyer. Gavin is still at the station. He sits in and watches it on the camera. The attorney is the leak. He was talking with the Garcia cartel in jail for over an hour. The Chief arrests the attorney. The Chief is able to manipulate them enough to incriminate themselves.

Fritzi takes Curtis into Federal custody for paying for the assassination attempt on Hobbs, as well as 14 other people including Fritzi.

The lawyer gets nasty and he wants a deal. The Chief gets nasty right back at him.

When you see Tyrell Baylor in Hell, you ask him what I wouldn’t dare to do.
The Chief

He confesses in writing to 14 accounts of attempted murder.

Provenza sees through the questions and brings it up to everyone. Raydor confirms that there is a leak in the Division. Gavin makes a statement to the leak. No matter what scurrying around they do, what they manage to get wind of, in any scenario where this case goes to court, Gavin will win.
