This series is based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries books by Charlaine Harris. It tells the story of how humans and vampires co-exist in a small southern town. This show has an addictive quality. After the third season started, I bought all of the books and read them. They were quite good, albeit short. The TV series is quite faithful to the books, which is always nice. There are some differences and the ‘adult’ factor makes for something that is interesting to watch on American TV.
Thanks to the books, there will be a lot of material available for the screenwriters for the story arcs in this show.
The series is adapted by Alan Ball. He also produced it. Alan Ball is the man behind Six Feet Under. The setting is interesting as well. Thanks to HBO, the show does have some mature content. It makes the whole thing more interesting.
New Orleans and Louisiana are a hotbed for vampire fiction. Lestat of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice makes the city his home.
The fourth season is off to a rocking start, as you’d expect from such a good show. Many of the the plotlines from Dead to the World have been integrated into the show. Naturally, there are enough differences to make the show worthwhile to watch, even for people who have read all of the Southern Vampire Mysteries,.

I like to watch True Blood episodes in batches. After I finished reading all of the Southern Vampire Mysteries, I was pretty happy to see True Blood return. You quickly forget how good this show is, but just like all of the previous episodes, this one is an incredible one. The story eases you in before ending with a bang. It turns out that Sookie went missing for over a year and a lot has changed since she left.
Her time in Faerie wasn’t happy, as they use their glamor to manipulate humans. Back on the earthly plane, things have moved on quite rapidly. Tara has left, Jason is a cop, Bill is a King, and Eric is Eric. I can see how they have woven in elements of the book, Dead to the World, into this storyline.
True Blood sure ends in cliffhangers. The books aren’t like that, but the TV show sure is. It makes it interesting to watch. I didn’t expect Tara to die or for Sookie to actually kill Debbie. And who would have predicted Russell’s return.

Both Holly and Sookie have been feeling dread. Tara comes to find them. She says that Jesus is dead and Marnie has come back in Lafayette.
Eric and Bill are already tied to a pyre. Lafayette is waiting for them. Holly is making a salt circle. She is trying to keep it on the down low. Lafayette starts the fire. Sookie uses her powers on Lafayette to throw him off. Eric and Bill are burning. Lafayette’s demon face appears. Holly is invoking a ritual to invoke the spirits that watch over them to come forth. Antonia is back. She blows out the pyre. She wants to take Marnie home. Adele Stackhouse takes Marnie out of Lafayette. Marnie leaves with Antonia.
Arlene comes face to face with Rene.
Jessica comes to see Jason. They have some vampire sex. She says that she doesn’t want to be his girlfriend. She just wants to be friends with some benefits. She can’t be exclusive.
I’m so over Sookie and her precious faerie vagina.
Pam is looking for Eric at Fangtasia. She’s freaking out. At least she’s no longer rotting. That was pretty disgusting.
Both Bill and Eric are feeding on Sookie. She tells Bill that she forgives him and hopes that he can forgive her. Sookie tells them that their time together is over. They can’t let her go, so she will have to walk away.
Jesus’ spirit comes to see Lafayette.
Dude I’m dead, you’re a medium, I’ll always be with you.
Andy gives Holly some flowers. She asks for a hug.
An angry wolf comes to find Sam after Luna and Emma leave. A hole was dug in a parking garage. Alcide is told by his foreman, who was glamored. It’s Russell Edginton.
Reverend Noah is a vampire and he comes to find Jason.
Nan comes to see Bill and Eric. Nan was fired/quit. Her last duty was to deliver the true death to both of them. She wants them to be part of her little mutiny. She threatens Sookie a bit too much. Bill and Eric kill her.
Debbie Pelt is waiting for Sookie with a shotgun. Tara saves her but gets her brains blown out. Sookie kills Debbie.
Holy crap, that’s how they end the season? Pretty brutal.
