Castle Rise S04E01 (ABC)

I’ve been a Nathan Fillion fan for quite a while. Ever since Firefly, I was really impressed by his acting. Since he is starring in a new series named Castle, I took it upon myself to watch it weekly.

Anyway, what do I like about Castle? Well it stars an obnoxious, womanizing novelist. Detective Kate Beckett is a closet hottie, played by Stana Katic. Her hotness is kind of hard to explain. The actress is quite hot, but in Castle, she toned it down. She doesn’t wear much makeup and favors a natural look, kind of like “Oh I’m hot, but I could be the girl next door, BTW, FYI, I’m still smoking hot.” That’s how I described her in my mind. She’s kind of got the ex-catwalk model look going for her, which is quite good.

So that’s a good point. Plus she’s Canadian and a good actress. That’s always a good combination.

Warning: spoilers ahead

The show centers around a novelist who is brought in to help deal with a string of murders which seem to be taken from the pages of his novels. At the same time, Castle has hit massive writer’s block after killing off the hero of his mystery book franchise, Derek Storm. Through Beckett, he is able to write once again.

Halfway between a drama and a romantic comedy, Castle is a fun show to watch. The characters play around a lot, making the viewer wonder when or if they will ever get together. It didn’t take Castle long to find out what makes Beckett tick. He uses clues and his imagination deftly.

ABC has started to release chapters of Richard Castle’s new book Heat Wave on its website. They are up to chapter 8 and I haven’t started yet, but it’s a pretty cool tie-in to the show.

The fourth season just started and needless to say that Beckett is still alive, although she’s different. The precinct is different too, thanks to a new female Captain. Breckett was incommunicado for a while, but when she comes back she’s surprised to learn that the investigation was shut down by Gates and that it made no progress. Castle helps her out, and they are warned by a man who received Montgomery’s files to stop investigating Beckett’s mother’s murder. It doesn’t stop Castle from continuing the investigation on his own.

Beckett is still alive. The shooter managed to disappear. The next day, she recovers. The boyfriend surgeon, who blames Castle for this, is at her side. She doesn’t remember Castle tackling her to try to save her or him telling her that he loved her.

She doesn’t want to talk to him anymore. She says that she’ll call him when she’s ready.

Montgomery mailed a file to someone. That man calls the congressional office in DC.

Beckett gets back to the office two months later. They didn’t get anything on the shooter. He’s a ghost. She tells Ryan and Esposito that she hasn’t talked to Castle in months.

The new captain is Victoria Gates and she kicked Castle to the curb. Gates made her spurs in IA. Castle followed a money trail. It led them to some clues. Gates shut down the case because Ryan and Esposito couldn’t tell her about Montgomery.

Ryan and Esposito catch a new case. Sonia Gilbert is dead in her place. Dale Landers is the boyfriend and he was seen leaving the scene.

Beckett comes to see Castle at a book signing. She says that she broke up with Josh. The files from the bank, that closed down, burned in some fire at the warehouse. He didn’t see the report. Beckett says that they need to see it.

Castle is able to make Gates reconsider thanks to his friend the mayor. Beckett also requalifies for her gun. The warehouse was burned down in order to cover their activities. Ron Halstaad was the investigating officer.

Gates sends all of them to get Gilbert’s boyfriend. Beckett comes face to face with a gun. She’s shaking. They get the perp. Dale’s tale is hard to believe. He woke up with a gun in his hand and blood all over. Gates wants them to press charges.

Beckett and Castle go see Halstaad. He denies everything and it makes Beckett suspicious.

The dude who received Montgomery’s files calls Castle. He wants to talk about Beckett. The man says that he received files. These files are what kept Montgomery’s family and Beckett safe. Now that he has them, he will use them and keep Beckett alive unless she continues digging. If she does, they’ll kill her.

Castle wants to try to convince her. His mother doubts that he’ll be able to. He gives it his best shot, but she’s adamant.

The Gilbert case is collapsing. Both Gilbert and Landers were roofied. Beckett thinks that the killer hid out in the apartment. The person hid under the bed. The killer is Mitch, Dale’s band-mate.

Mitch was having an affair with Sonia at the same time. When he wanted to takes things more seriously, Sonia cut him off. It was his plan to take care of them both.

Beckett goes to see her therapist. It’s Worf (Michael Dorn), from Star Trek: The Next Generation. She tells him that she lied. She remembers everything that happened the day of the shooting.
