I was pretty happy that Amazon Prime had picked up The Expanse for a 4th season. It’s quite a compelling show, and one of the few science fiction shows still on TV. To be honest, it had been so long since I had watched the show or read the books that I needed a recap before diving in.
The season started pretty well. It’s kind of weird that Bobbie never goes on the Rocinante, but overall it was satisfying. Avasarala’s struggle was OK, but I’m not sure at how closely it matched what I read in Cibola Burn. I feel like there was a bit of plot padding when it comes to what’s going on the planet. Spending a whole season on these Belter/Inner problems on the planet seems a bit of a waste. It was riveting, but I wished they would have elaborated more on the protomolecule. The drama on the planet was enough for half the season, but spending the whole 10 episodes on it…
That doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a good season. However, there wasn’t much revealed about the protomolecule and its origins. I hope that next season, instead of padding episodes, they’ll actually try to move the story forward a lot more. I feel like if they’d gotten the pacing right, they could have fit two books in this season.
I still recommend this series. It’s really good. The next book, Tiamat’s Wrath, is coming out in March 2020.
