Does Too Much Tech in the Home Hurt Health?

With all of the tech that we are exposed to daily, does any of it harm our personal health? From our experience, if you use tech too much, it will hurt you in some way or form. In our opinion, a judicious use of technology can actually improve your health, but anything that’s overused can become an addiction.

Parachute Kids

Parachute kids are Asian-born international students who have come to the United States to study unaccompanied by their parents. Usually, they will stay with a family member, like an aunt or grandparent. But sometimes, the parents hire someone to act as their guardian.

Children of rich Asian families sent to live in U.S. suburbs known for good schools and safe streets. Typically, mothers try to split their time between their husbands in Asia and their children in America, often leaving housekeepers in their stead. Parents may feel guilty about spending too little time with their kids and shower them with money and gifts, says May To, executive director of the Asian Youth Center, which has dealt with parachute kids.

This is quite common in Taiwan. I’ve known quite a few parachute kids that were getting some intensive ESL tutoring in order to be able to speak well in the US or Canada. Typically, a lot of Taiwanese pursue graduate degrees in the US as well, after completing their undergraduate degree in Taiwan. Parents will save for years to make this possible.

While this can be seen as a great opportunity, it can also be trouble for the children that won’t be supervised as assiduously as by their own parents. In some cases, the kids will live alone in apartments paid for by their parents without any supervision. It can also leave them vulnerable to kidnapping, much more than if they were living with their parents.

Verbomoteur Alice

[It’s nice of you to come see Bambi with us]
My 3.5 year old “niece” Alice to me tonight

Niece is the best description, because she’s the granddaughter of my brother-in-law’s mother’s new German husband. New in the sense that he’s not my brother-in-law’s father. It’s rare to find a little kid that speaks so well and she does talk a lot. It makes you want to talk with her a lot. Her mother confided that it was a blessing and a curse at the same time. What’s even more surprising is that she speaks quite quickly and clearly, no indistinct blends or syllables. Her mother also told me that Justine, Alice’s 14-month old sibling, is also learning to speak quite quickly, quicker than Alice, who had a well developed vocabulary at age 2.

The Boys And The Subway

A charming story told by Christoph Niemann illustrated over at the NYT. He tells how his two boys are in love with the NYC subway system. The illustrations are really good too.

Violent Acres And The Cuteness Attack

I found this part particularly funny. V was sick, she’s back and it’s fun.

I jumped out of my chair so fast you would have thought someone lit my ass on fire. “Of course you can have a glass of milk!” I told her, “Any girl with manners as perfect as those can have all the milk she wants!”

As I walked to the fridge and poured her milk, I went on and on and on about how adorable little girls with good manners are. After I handed her the glass of milk, she enthusiastically said, “Thank you!”

I dramatically clutched my heart and insisted that my body could not handle this level of cuteness. I implied that if she kept this behavior up, I might just keel over dead after having a cute-attack. She giggled happily.

I sat with her as she ever so daintily sipped her milk. I was sure to let her know that the way she was sipping out of her glass was especially regal and speculated that she must come from a long line of royal princesses. She beamed.

When she was all done, she picked up her glass and dropped it into the kitchen sink. I responded by hurling my body to the floor, twitching and convulsing in throes of a full-fledged cute-attack.

“Oh no!” I moaned, “I can’t take this! Please, thank you, and putting your cup in the sink? Are you trying to kill me? What’s next, Princess? Are you going to pick up your toys without me asking? Oooohhh! I can’t take it! I can’t take the cuteness!”

Laughing hysterically, she ran into her room and starting picking up her toys.

Kid Nation We’ve All Decided To Go Mad S01E13 (CBS)

I’ve changed my mind about Kid Nation. It’s just like some form of summer camp activity with cameras. CBS has noticed it as well, because the ratings aren’t great either. It’s still interesting to see the kids interact.
