4.550 KM

Tonight I ran 4.550KM. The temperature was about right and I ran slower than my usual pace. I managed to run almost 5K. I went around my “track” 7 times. I ran slower than my usual pace.

Well last Tuesday in the rain, I had to brace my scooter with my right foot. I injured the same bruise once again. I wasn’t happy. Luckily nothing was wrong and I’ve been diligently icing it down.

I ran 4.550K in about 32 minutes. For these short runs, hydration isn’t really an issue.

I did a weigh-in today. I’ve dropped some more weight. I weigh in at 78 kg (172lbs). When I arrived, I think I gained a few pounds, but since I started exercising it melted away. I’ve been eating lots of fruits, juices, shakes and the life for the past three weeks. It’s been very healthy. I’ve found my favorite drink in all of Taiwan. No it’s not an energy drink, it’s fresh squeezed orange juice made from Sunkist oranges. It tastes incredible. It costs about $60NT (~2$) for 500cc, but it’s worth it. I drank two in one day. I also drank a papaya milk. Today I saw some Sunkist oranges for sale at a fruit store in Taipei. They were selling them for $25NT (~0.83$) each. I didn’t buy any, but I most probably will. To make 500cc of OJ with those oranges takes about 4-5 oranges. The smell is incredible.

This week has been exhausting. But I’m feeling pretty good and I might go for another run tomorrow. I’ve actually toyed with the idea of running with a pack on my back, to make it more of a workout, but I’ll leave that for later.

This week, I want to be able to run 10K in one run.

Today my lunch was a mango milk, three kiwis, a dragon fruit (pitaya), and an apple pear. Total cost? 105NT (3.5$).

Work Out Schedule

I managed to go for my second run this week last night. It was extremely humid and hot, about 30C, but I managed to run for about 20 minutes. I was sweating profusely afterwards. I read about hot weather running and there are some good points and bad points.

Mainly I don’t run enough for it to be a real issue. I’m hoping to be able to run 5K a day in a few weeks, which is what I used to do before.

I’ve weighed myself again just to make sure, and yes, I do weigh 79kg (174lbs).

My legs were pretty sore in the beginning of the week. That’s why I didn’t manage to run before Thursday night. I’m planning on going for a run tonight as well. Probably during the weekend as well. There are two options. Running in the morning and running at night. I prefer running at night, even though it would be better running before sunrise.

I’ve managed to stay away from too many carbs, even though at times my stomach feels empty after eating fruits. I’m working fulltime again and the schools are providing me with food. However, there is no rice on my menu anymore. This makes things a bit more complicated. Usually, I’ll just take some meat and veggies, and pour some soup over that. I’ll eat another bowl of soup afterwards. That’s enough for lunch.

I’ll eat some fruits before my 16:30 classes and I’ll have another dinner at school, usually meat and veggies. When I come back home, I’ll have more fruits. I eat guavas, lichis and papayas.

Morgellon’s Disease

If you didn’t know about Morgellon’s Disease, Koantum Matters has got a good primer on the illness. I wrote about A Scanner Darkly and Morgellon’s syndrome back in 2006.

Out Of It

I was partially out of it today. I woke up at 5:30AM to finish typing up an assignment that was due. All of the programming was done. All that was left for me to do is to type my part. I completed it in about 40 minutes.

Then I went to school to assist to two hours worth of oral presentations. Out of the four, I really liked two. Actually I really liked one. The other one was done by Chloé and she is a funny, lanky girl. She presented it well, in my opinion.

The other presentation was done by David and he talked about music and math. It was a very good presentation. It made me wonder about math in electronic music.

I didn’t have to wear any proper pants today since I wasn’t working. So I wore some jeans. My Numerical Analysis professor finished his class 20 minutes early and I was off with Fannie. We usually take the bus together. She’s a third year math student. I like her. She wasn’t working either and was heading home. Contrary to usual, we were heading in opposite directions.

I was planning on going grocery shopping at the IGA. As usual, I got some great healthy foods. I bought some fennel, since I was planning on making a light fennel onion soup later today. I bought some pork as well. Two types actually. One to grill on the BBQ, another to make some green coconut curry.

I bought lots of oranges and bananas, 4L of milk, a red tuna steak which I planned on eating sashimi style later that today. I knew from experience that a 400g piece would be enough for two meals.

For once I didn’t forget the shaving cream. I’ve been forgetting it for weeks now. I tried to get the right type of deodorant, but ended up getting some clear gel deodorant from Gillette. I don’t like that one. I only realized which one it was when I arrived home. I like the antiperspirant sticks.

The bag was quite heavy, but manageable as usual. I arrived home at around 1PM.

I’ve been totally out of it ever since.

A Hole In My Heart On The Storytree

I have this student named Vicki in one of my classes. All of my students this semester are adults. She’s this wiry short blond woman. She looks about 30ish, but she’s actually closer to 40ish. At least that’s what she’s told me.

She looks good. Her demeanor makes her seem much younger that she really is. I initially thought that she was about 30ish. I was actually very surprised when she told me that she was closer to 40. Petite, blond, green eyes, glasses, girlish, and flushes easily are words that describe her well.

She’s a fun student to have around. She’s very energetic and brings a great atmosphere to the 4 person class that I teach Tuesday mornings.

The week after Easter, she wasn’t at class. I found that surprising, because she always comes. I didn’t really think about it. Recently, I had one student absent because she was recovering from knee surgery. She’s about 23.

The following week, Vicky was at class, but she told me that she didn’t have time to do her homework. She was hospitalized during Easter.

I asked hospitalized? Whatever for?

I had a cerebral stroke.

Cerebral stroke?, I ask.

Yes cerebral stroke.

Well, on Friday I wasn’t feeling too good. I had a migraine. I took some Advil and still had dinner with my family. There was a strange moment during the night, but it passed.

The next morning, I found that I couldn’t really feel my arm. I mean that I could move, but I couldn’t feel it. Something was up. Anyways, I had to drive the kids to their practice. The next day, I brought my daughter to the doctor’s office for something unrelated. I started to tell my family doctor about what had happened.

He immediately grew concerned and ordered an MRI. The next day I had the scan. Immediately I knew that something was wrong. The doctor called another doctor. They looked at the result and called my own doctor. They all looked at my scan.

I knew that something was up.

My doctor informed me that I had had a cerebral stroke recently. This was why I had the strange feeling in my arm. Really? I asked. Yes, a cerebral stroke. It’s very unusual because you are so young.

It turns out that I have a heart murmur. I have a small hole in my heart. The non-oxygenated blood that went directly to my brain caused this.

I am seeing a cardiologist tomorrow she said.

They tell me that I’ll have an angioplasty. It’s going to be a routine procedure. They won’t open my rib cage or anything like that. I’m very glad that I don’t have any side-effects.

Ray Kurzweil And The Technological Singularity

Ray Kurzweil is popping all of the pills imaginable in order to be alive for the upcoming technological singularity.

I was working today. I had no classes. At 1PM, I got a headache. At around 2PM, I arrived at school to finish a Matlab programming assignment. By the time I left, I wasn’t feeling good at all.

I didn’t know if it was the lack of food, lack of sleep or just a bug running around that had gotten me sick. I started feeling very hot. I knew this feeling. It had to do with something I ate. Oddly enough, I hadn’t eaten in the morning. I woke up late and was on the run to arrive in time for my classes.

I ended up throwing up my banana smoothie that I made myself when I arrived home. Afterwards, I felt better. I cleaned up and went to my last 90 minute class. Puking had made me miss my usual buss. I had to hurry to arrive in time. My student didn’t show up so I went back home. I treated myself to some Italian sausages with some pasta. I hadn’t eaten pasta in three months. I felt that I needed it. I couldn’t stand eating any goulash or blue cheese tonight. I read blogs while I cooked.

I wasn’t surprised that I had 131 items to read. I managed to get through them pretty quickly. I had appetite and I was able to hold my food down. In my opinion, I must have eaten something that didn’t sit right with me the day before. I have a sensitive stomach.

I’m trying to relax. I have another assignment to complete this week and another midterm. Then my midterm rush will be over.

Even though I didn’t want to take any pictures today, I did take a few good ones. The sky was almost cleared up after the heavy snowfall of the past week. The sunset was great. Quebec has gotten 448cm of snow this winter.

Patrick Swayze Has Died

The National Enquirer reported Swayze was diagnosed in late January, and the cancer has spread to other parts of his body.

Patrick, 57, has been traveling to Stanford University’s cancer center with his wife Lisa Niemi for chemotherapy treatments, the Enquirer reported.

An insider said: “He was told he could have two more treatments, but his cancer was not responding. In short – they held out little hope for a cure.

“It’s time to start praying for a miracle.”

More from the source of the article.

Update: Patrick Swayze died last night at the tender age of 57.

In late 2008, Swayze denied claims made by tabloids that the cancer had spread to his liver.[38] However, in an interview with Barbara Walters which aired in January 2009, Swayze admitted that he had a “tiny little mass” in his liver. On January 9, 2009, Swayze was hospitalized with pneumonia. The pneumonia was said to be a complication of chemotherapy treatments for Swayze’s cancer.[39] On January 16, he was released from the hospital to rest at home with his wife.[40] On April 19, 2009, doctors informed Swayze that the cancer had again metastasized to his liver.[41] Swayze stated that his chain smoking probably “had something to do with” the development of his disease. Photos taken of a gaunt Swayze in the months before his death showed him continuing to smoke.[42][43]
