Rare Northern Bald Ibis Killed Illegally By Hunters in Italy

A rare species of ibis is part of a large European conservation effort, and the leading bird in this project was killed last weekend by illegal hunters in Italy. Goja, a northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita), was in transit to her wintering grounds in Tuscany when she was shot down.

Italian Volcano Etna Has Its Third Eruption of 2012

The Italian volcano Etna, located in on the eastern coast of Sicily, has had its third paroxysm of 2012 on March 4th, its first since early February. The new eruption was a relatively short event, which was preceded by 18 days worth of smaller strombolian activity, which are relatively lower level volcanic eruptions.

Earliest Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Strains Were First Detected in Italy

Contrary to what was previously believed, the earliest cases of the Totally Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (TDR-TB) were not the current 12 known cases reported in Mumbai or the 15 cases in Iran from 2009, but rather two middle-aged women from Italy, who died several years after first contracting the disease.
