Kid Nation S01E01 (CBS)

An interesting sea horse going on its merry way in Atoll Reef, Ocean Park, Hong Kong.

This reality TV show sounds like it was made by stupid studio execs. I can already see the dialogue.

-So… We need a new show…
-I dunno, dogs? Kids? Survivor Kids?
-Everybody loves kids, why don’t we have a kid show?
-Good idea, but we want adults to watch it, so let’s make it like Survivor, everybody watches Survivor! We did it with Big Brother and got the best ratings ever this summer!
-We can’t call it Survivor Kids though, since people would freak out, if they are being starved and everything…
-Let’s keep’em in the States and make it like a “social experiment”, with waivers and shit and keep it entertaining.
-Sounds pretty good, I’m sure it will do great! Survivor kicks ass, this show will rock!

I’m sure something similar happened with the CBS studio execs. Kid Nation was supposed to air during the summer, but got put into Jericho’s spot for the fall season.

Survivor China S15E01 (CBS)

Skewed view of the Bank of China building.

The next season of survivor just started. The funny thing is that it’s taking place in China, in a remote region. I’m currently residing on the other side of the world, in Taiwan, known as the Republic of China, which China considers a wayward province.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles S01E01 (Fox)

The Sarah Connor character was made popular in the Terminator series of movies, with the second one being the most memorable by far. James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton made this a great movie to watch when I was a teenager back in 1991. This was also the first time that we saw the T-1000, made out of liquid metal. It was the first movie to successfully combine CGI with real characters in a movie.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Reaper Pilot (CW)

Reaper is a new series on CW. It will premiere on September 25th 2007. The show has been given the green light for 15 episodes for the fall season.

This show reminds me a bit of the concept behind Dead Like Me (Showtime). It is what we call a Bangsian fantasy, a show whose plot is partially or totally set in the afterlife.

However, Reaper is a lot more comical than Dead Like Me. I like the fact that they used a so-called looser to bestow the gift of Reaping onto. The premise is pretty funny as well; sorry son, we sold your soul to the devil so that I could get better!

The actors are pretty good and the special effects are great. The initial bad guy really seemed on fire and when he became a full fledged demon, it was pretty strange.

The supporting cast is interesting and I wonder if it will be picked up again.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Against A Dark Background By Iain M. Banks

Against A Dark Background was the 5th novel of Scottish writer Iain M. Banks in the science-fiction genre.

This time, Banks leaves the comfort of The Culture for a whole new setting. It was published in 1993. Against a Dark Background was rewritten from an original work of 1975.

This is the 5th novel from Banks that I have read over a short period of time. Over the last week, I have also read Excession, Consider Phlebas, The Player of Games and The Algebraist.

This is a review of the science-fiction novel Against A Dark Background by Iain M. Banks. It does contain some spoilers.
