Powerful magnetic disturbances in Sol’s corona have hurled a large burst of charged particles into space on March 4th. The solar storm erupted from the sunspot AR 1429 at 11:13PM and according to NASA, it should hit Earth on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

A small town in northeastern Brazil, in the state of Maranhão, was greeted by a 110-pound metal sphere that came crashing down. Locals from Riacho dos Poços reported that the crash sounded like a plane had fallen or an earthquake.

Private spaceflight company Masten Space’s XA-01.B rocket, which they have dubbed Xombie for short, was recently launched and it included Draper Laboratory’s GENIE system. As of 7AM (10:00 GMT), the European Space Agency’s new Vega rocket has successfully launched on Monday, February 13th from Kourou, French Guyana, off the northern coast of South America. While Vega isn’t gigantic, it promises to be twice as effective as similar-sized rockets. The maiden voyage includes 9 satellites to deliver into orbit, including LARES, the frame-dragging measurement satellite.
