Torchwood S02E03 The Last Man (BBC)

Torchwood is a science fiction drama television program, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles. It deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, who deal with supernatural occurrences. An initial 13-part series was commissioned by the BBC as a spin-off from the long-running science fiction program Doctor Who with which it is closely interlinked.

From the Torchwood Wikipedia entry.

I didn’t like this episode either. It was a bit of a bore. It’s too bad. The new season of Torchwood isn’t starting out with a bang. I actually like the new season of Primeval a lot better than the new season of Torchwood.

Look, we all know that Captain Jack is bisexual. He has made out with a lot of male characters already. Do I have to watch him French kiss other males in Torchwood each week? What’s going on? Why has this show become so touchy feely? If I wanted to watch Queer as Folk, I would get those episodes instead of Torchwood. This season is getting disappointing fast. It’s not only Captain Jack, but other main characters who have their love interests. In this episode, it’s Toshiko. From the previews, I can see that the next episode, Gwen’s fiancée will get involved as well.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Two people from Torchwood are searching for ghosts in the past. A nurse sends them to a ward. It’s happening in a hospital in 1918. They see Toshiko trying to help a guy named Tommy. It’s a window into another time. Tommy tells the Torchwood guys to take his other self from the hospital and bring him over.

The scene shifts to Toshiko getting ready for work. They froze Tommy in 1918. They need to defrost him every few years.
Captain Jack tells Gwen that back in 1918 at the hospital, a timeshift started to happen. A timeshift is when two slices of time collide. When parts of 1918 start appearing at the hospital, Tommy will help Torchwood somehow. Torchwood has left sealed orders from 1918. The box has been time locked. It will only open when it’s the right time.

Gwen looks at the photo from Torchwood 1918. She decides to go to the hospital. Toshiko takes Tommy out for the day.

Gwen sees a man hobbling towards her. He’s missing a leg. He disappears and she cowers. She freaks out.

Jack comes by. On their date, Tommy feels something. Construction workers are tearing part of the hospital apart. It’s stirring up something that has remained dormant for a while.

Captain Jack sees someone in a wheelchair as well. Gwen sees someone else. She sees Gwen as well. It gets a bit scary when the nurse is trying to get rid of Gwen. She disappears before things get worse.

Tommy kisses Toshiko. She’s put off by it. She’s put off because she thinks that she’s too old for Tommy. She kisses him. She invites him back to her place. They kiss some more. She gets a call from Jack. It’s time. Captain Jack says that when the hospital was getting demolished, it started the timeshift.

Owen confirms with Gwen that the timeshift is occurring right now. The timecoded box with sealed orders finally opens.

Captain Jack reads the orders. It contains instructions for Tommy and Toshiko. Tommy will step back into 1918 and stitch time back together. He gets a rift manipulator. Once he is inside the timeshift, he can close the fracture. Jack tells Toshiko that three weeks after Tommy steps through the rift, he will get executed for cowardice.

Toshiko is told about Tommy’s fate. Captain Jack tells her that Torchwood 1918 saw her giving Tommy instructions. Toshiko and Tommy have one last night together.

Yanto and Jack french kiss again. This is getting annoying.

The next morning everybody gets ready for the operation.

Tommy is recovering his memory from 1918. He was shellshocked and got sent back to the front. That is why he died. He got shellshocked again and the army executed him for cowardice.

The scene plays out as before. Thanks to Toshiko, Tommy does what he is supposed to do. The two Tommys get exchanged. Tommy is back in his bed. The timeshift hasn’t stopped. Tommy hasn’t used the rift key. They decide to psychically project Toshiko in Tommy’s mind to make him use the rift key. He does so and repairs the timeshift.
