The Mentalist Red Tide S01E03 (CBS)

The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.

Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.

Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

A little girl finds a young woman dead on the beach. Her name is Christine Tanner, 15, who drowned and washed up on the beach. There was BFT from a surfboard. The water in her lungs came from a ditch.

Some kids are having a ceremony for Christine in Santa Marta. They come to see the kids. The kids say that Danny hooked up with Christine. Patrick asks them what colour Chris would be and which animal she would be. They say orange and rabbit. Jane decides to stay at the beach for a little while.

They talk with her father. It took him 2 days to notice that his girl was missing. The mother was killed by a drunk driver, a college kid. Christine took over for the mom. She was arrested last year for smoking pot. She got into trouble because of her friend Darlene. She recently got into surfing. They were a good influence. She was thinking about college. She always talked about Flipper. Agent Lisbon has them run the names.

Jane is still at the beach playing with sand. A little girl lends him a bucket. He makes a big sandcastle. It looks like Walt Disney Castle. The beach bums applaud.

Agent Lisbon talks with Darlene, who’s in holding. She says that last year, Christine was banging an older guy. She hasn’t got much to say. Lisbon finds out that Philip Handler is a nickname for Flippers. He likes to beat up women. He’s a bad ass surfer dude.

They go to his trailer. They find Jane there playing chess with him. His hair was braided exactly the same way as Christine. He beat up a girl because she was damaging marine life. He calls Chris a child of the ocean. He likes children. He denies having sex with her. He says he waits till they hit legal age.

He gives them his alibi. He was hanging out with the surfer crowd.

Christine’s body was put in the water during that surfer party. They need to find out what happened then. They question the kids. They didn’t tell them about the party. Wynn says that they were drinking beer and trespassing. It was a beach at Devon Point. The land belongs to Danny’s dad. Flipper left early when the booze ran out. Hope says that Chris was probably waiting for someone.

At Devon Point, the nightguard didn’t show up for work. His name is Eddie Garcia. Jane finds something at the site. They find Eddie Garcia. He’s been killed and dropped in concrete. They talk with Danny’s father Dean. They have to close off his construction site to investigate. He responds to Pops. He’s the one that Christine is sleeping with. Jane is insulting enough for Dean to deck him. Dean gets arrested.

They question him at another location because the Sheriff doesn’t want to get involved. Jane knows that he’s not going to confess. Jane calls Danny and heads back to Devon Point. Dean leaves the CBI offices smugly.

All of the kids knew that Danny’s father was having an affair with Christine. They thought that she was meeting Dean that night. Jane tells them that he wants to hypnotize them. Hope sees Danny’s father that night staring at them. Danny storms off.

Andy says that Danny’s dad killed Christine. They leave.

The next day, Hope comes to see them. They tell Hope that Dean had an iron-clad alibi. That means that Hope was lying. She never liked Christine. Jane says that he didn’t hypnotize them. She came up with a fake story to incriminate Pops.

Hope says that Flipper already left. The guard told them to leave. Danny hit the guard and he died when he hit his head. Chris saw this. They all promised not to tell except Chris. Danny hit her over the head and then drowned her.

Danny is at the station. Danny says that he didn’t do this. They have Danny confront Hope. Danny says that Hope killed Chris. She was jealous. Hope says that she did it for Danny. The other two kids arrive. They say that it was Flipper. Jane says that all 4 of them killed her. She made all of them take part of the killing so that all of them would not tell the truth.
