In Treatment Week 4 Sophie Wednesday 4PM S01E18 (HBO)

This is a surprising show on HBO. I was really dumbfounded when I discovered that there will be 43 episodes of In Treatment. Wow, 43. These are only half hour shows, or almost half hour shows, but still. That is just incredible.

In Treatment is based on the Israeli series Betipul. Gabriel Byrne plays Paul Weston, a psychologist trying to deal with his patients while going through some personal problems. Each show focuses on a different patient. Mondays feature Laura, an anestheologist infatuated with Paul. Tuesdays feature Alex, an ex-fighter pilot traumatized by events that happened a few years ago. Wednesdays feature Sophie, a suicidal teenage gymnast with Olympic aspirations. Thursdays feature Jake and Amy, a couple in couple’s counseling. Fridays feature Gina, Paul’s own therapist and mentor that he stopped seeing 8 years ago for some reason.

I’ve always loved psychology. This show really feeds that need. The sessions are almost verbatim of what would happen in a real session. This show is about characters, not actions. It’s a very smart show and I am also very surprised that Marky Mark is the executive producer. Marky Mark has had success with Entourage so it makes sense that he decided to try out other projects.

This is a great show. I really liked it. I find that it’s best to watch it a few episodes at a time. I recommend this show.

In this session, Sophie makes a lot of progress. Maybe even too much progress in a short time. Paul is happy to see her talk about her problems in detail, however things don’t end well.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Sophie arrives without her casts. She looks alright. She lies down on his couch. She says that she stayed awake all night and walked here. She’s had a lot to drink. She kept getting tequila shots.

She’s wearing platform heels. She tells him that her mom took her shopping because of what he told her mom. Paul says that he didn’t tell her mom. She says that her mom gave her a bra for her last birthday. It was worse than coal. Her mom doesn’t like her going to the gym because her mom thinks that her boobs won’t grow. Sophie enjoys avoiding her mom.

Paul says that her shoes remind her of Dorothy’s shoes from the Wizard of Oz. Paul thinks that her shoes are a symbol. She says that Sy won’t let her train. She’s training with the 10 year olds.

Sophie talks about starving herself during her training. Sophie gets up on Paul’s couch and wants to show him her moves. She does a back flip off the top of the couch. Almost immediately afterwards, she doesn’t feel well. She feels nauseous. Sophie says that at 2AM, the gymnast took her to his room. He wanted to have sex. He couldn’t get it up.

Finally he did and they had sex. She didn’t feel anything. Afterwards, he said that she f*cks like someone who has been sexually abused. She kept trying to think happy thoughts, but each time that she closed her eyes, the images turned to rot.

She went to the bus stop so that she was sure that she wouldn’t miss her session. She was waiting and she was thinking about Dana.

Sophie starts to talk about her accident. She was riding Sy’s bike. The seat was hurting her. She went into the blind turn and was further blinded by a car with its high beams on. She wanted to get hit. She wanted to die. She tried to kill herself.

Paul tells her that she isn’t a freak. She says that as soon as the white car passed, she knew that she was going to have an accident. She then rode purposefully into the street. She felt free. When she was hit she thought that she finally killed her. She doesn’t know who her is.

Sophie goes into the bathroom. She thinks that she will throw up but doesn’t. She sits on the toilet bowl. She looks at herself in the mirror. She looks in the medicine cabinet. She takes out some pills. She is planning on taking them right here right now. Paul knows that something is up. He asks her if everything is alright. She opens the pills and takes a handful. The water is running. She comes out of the bathroom. It’s not apparent if she took the pills. Sophie is about to leave Paul’s office. She asks him to read her mind.

She starts to have trouble walking. Paul grabs her before she falls down.
