The Closer Off the Hook S06E06 (TNT)

The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

From wiki’s page.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.

I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

A recent murder takes on a political spin, as the victim was a cop. She was more than that. She was a commissioner on the board of parole. Pope thinks that Johnson isn’t doing enough and takes over the investigation, which is a complete fiasco. Thankfully, Johnson finds the killer, even though Pope would have never been able to do so.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Gabriel gets a call from a potential victim. She wants to speak with Detective Erico. There is no Erico here. There is a Verico who works stalking cases.

Commander Taylor sends uniforms to all potential stalking victims. They found Danielle Ross, who was shot in the temple with a .40 calibre handgun. Her throat was cut. The detectives can’t find a point of entry. The killer must have used an electric remote on the same frequency to get in.

Verico arrives. He’s from Threat Management. Danielle Ross headed the California State Parole Board. Verico wanted her to get police protection. She didn’t want it.

Someone broke in her car. Nothing was taken. Then someone broke in her house last Wednesday. They broke into her car to get the remote control. Pope arrives in a huff and puff. Pope decides to take over the case.

Pope wanted Johnson to review all of the inmates who were denied parole in the last year. Pope brings in a lot of people. Johnson is still leading a sub-investigation. An inmate at Folsom is said to put a hit out on Commissioner Ross. Pope’s heavy-handed way of working at things is going to blow up in his face. He’s bringing Medina over from Folsom.

The Chief regroups in her home with her squad. The office is taken over by Pope. She wants to speak with Verico. He was abruptly dismissed by Pope earlier.

The Chief has to scramble back to the office to question Medina. Pope has obviously forgotten how to investigate crimes.

The squad takes over Pope’s office because he took over their murder room. They hypothesis is that Medina hired an amateur to kill Ross. They find someone who fits the bill. Conway murdered someone, but he’s in jail. Maybe Conway had a girlfriend or wife who stalked Ross. Conway killed someone in the same way as Ross was killed. Well, not exactly, but the MO fits. Boxcutters were used. The guy he killed had a wife. This is the next likely suspect. Her name is Anne Webber. She is wearing a perfume with gardenias. This is what Ross smelled in her home. They tell her that Conway is innocent.

Webber is going into shock. The Chief has placed roadblocks all over the place to lead them by Ross’ home. They find the remote control for the garage in her car. She broke into Ross’ car and reprogram her own remote control with that signal. She then murdered her. She came back again and again. One day, she found her gun and boxcutters.

Pope made a mess of things. The Chief tells him as much. He also doesn’t seem to be able to apologize.
